Travel to Costa Rica

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica is renowned for its rich biodiversity and commitment to conservation.

The country offers a plethora of unique experiences, from exploring cloud forests and active volcanoes to relaxing on idyllic beaches.

Its “pura vida” lifestyle reflects Costa Rica’s laid-back and friendly atmosphere, making it a favourite among eco-tourists and adventure seekers alike.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

Dry Season

The dry season runs from December to April and is ideal for beach activities and exploring national parks.

However, the weather in Costa Rica is always hard to predict due to the many different microclimates!

Wet Season

Running from May to November, the wet season features heavier rain which could disrupt your travel. However, it’s also less crowded and offers lusher landscapes and overflowing waterfalls!

Transport in Costa Rica

Most small towns are walkable, or bike-able – and on foot or pushbike is always our favourite way to discover a new place!

Public Bus

In between towns, an extensive network connects major cities and towns. Schedules can be found at bus terminals or online.​

Do note that the public bus services in Costa Rica are considerably more expensive than those of the other Central American countries.

Shuttle

Dedicated tourist shuttles offer comfortable and direct routes between tourist destinations. These can be booked through travel agencies or hotels.​

We used public busses the majority of the time, however some routes were just too difficult (for example, Monteverde to La Fortuna – for this one, we had to book a tourist shuttle).

Taxis

Ensure they are official (red with a yellow triangle). Always agree on a price before you get in.


Car Rental

Ideal for exploring remote areas, but be cautious of road conditions and ensure proper insurance coverage.​

Safety in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is very safe and well set-up for travellers.

In fact, Costa Rica is famous for not having an army, and maintaining political stability.

The most common threat is pickpocketing and general tourist scams. Be sure to take common precautions, keep valuables on you, and try not to flash any luxury items.

Be extra vigilant as always when taking cash out of an ATM.

The only place we felt uncomfortable was the capital (San José) and would recommend that you pass through here without sticking around. Be extra cautious in the downtown area and around parks.

If you’re road tripping, keep vehicles locked, and try not to camp out on beaches. Also, don’t approach the wild life!
