Australia Travel Guides

Travel to Australia
For me (Hannah), this is my home country.
Growing up in Australia, you get spoiled for beaches and weather. It’s only after going overseas that you realise how incredible Australian beaches really are!
That being said, don’t make the mistake many international arrivals make in thinking it’s summer all year round.
This country is bloody HUGE, and there are so many different parts to it, meaning different climates, weather, and gear required.
From the humid tropics of Far North Queensland, to the blazing deserts of the Northern Territory, and the icy winters of Tasmania, this behemoth of a country, continent and island all rolled into one has something for everyone.
Sample a taste of the world’s best coffee (sorry Italy) and see just why McCafe – Maccas’s Aussie export – has really gone global.
From the Matildas to Crocodile Dundee to Uluru, it’s a country of icons for sure.
Best Time to Visit Australia
Summer is December to February, and winter is June to August.
If you’re coming for ski season in Victoria, July/August is your best bet.
If you want hot summer days spent on a beach in Byron Bay or Noosa, head over between November and March.
There are rainy and dry seasons which prevent access to certain parts of the country at certain times, which we’ll cover in destination specific posts.
Stinger season runs from early November to late May.
During stinger season, sections of Northern Australian coastline are more dangerous for swimming.
So, if you’re fangin’ for a summer dip up in Cairns, wear a stinger suit.
Transport in Australia
Between major cities, you can choose to fly, take a coach, or drive.
If you’re going to be moving a lot and can split the cost of a vehicle with others, this could be a great option. Prepare for massive distances, with often over 10+ hour drives.
For reference, to drive from Brisbane to Cairns takes 20 HOURS!
Within cities, get your hands on a transport card and load that bad boy up. Some cities accept credit card to tap on and off busses, trains, trams & city cats (ferries).
Brisbane – Translink Go Card
Melbourne – myki
Sydney – Opal Card
Adelaide – Metro Card
Perth – SmartRider
Hobart – Metro Greencard
Canberra – MyWay
Darwin – Tap & Ride Card
Safety in Australia
You’re going to laugh, but Australia’s actually very safe. Almost too safe … well that’s what Kéran thought when he first arrived from Paris.
For a country that’s famously deadly, the gravest threat you’ll encounter is probably sunburn.
Our UV is regularly in the double digits, so make sure to wear sun protection!
Be sure to follow signs at hiking trails and waterways. Follow all signage at creek-beds – they indicate when there is the possibility of certain wildlife around.
If you’re planning at trip into the outback, take all of the appropriate gear, spare water and fuel, or a guided tour if you aren’t confident!
