Cafés in the Heart of Byron Bay

1. The Rocks

This was our favourite spot in Byron! Right next to the iconic ’70s brick Aquarius Hostel on Lawson St, this café always attracts a great mix of locals and travellers, young and young at heart, giving a super fun vibe.

This is one of the best cafes on the list in terms of great value. Items come in from around $15+, and there is plenty of choice.

For veggies, you can’t go past The Nourish Bowl, an absolute treat filled with kumara, quinoa and tahini. Other stand out items include the Barramundi Salad, Wild Mushroom Bruschetta and Smoked Salmon Sliders (delicious, featuring a cashew cheese spread).

The menu has an awesome range to suit all taste buds, including classic go-to brunch items, and freshly baked pastries and brownies. They also serve up some of the best coffee in Byron.

We snagged some of the Parmesan fries in the evening as well, and they were killer.

2. Bali Bagus

Right up on the beachfront sits the Indonesian-inspired Bali Bagus. This surfer and dog friendly café invites you to walk up fresh out of the surf with salty hair and sandy feet.

Don’t stress if you’ve partied a little too hard and slept in!

The all-day menu features a fusion of Indonesian and Western-style iconic dishes such as a classic Big Breakfast with house made cashew hollandaise, Nasi Goreng, Gado Gado and a stunning Beef Rendang curry.

3. Espressohead

For the coffee lovers!

This one is right in the heart of Byron nestled just off main beach, opposite the courthouse.

A local’s classic for over a decade, this is the perfect spot to grab your quality cuppa.

The breakfast options range from über-healthy to indulgent treats. For a must try – grab the Espressohead breakfast roll (with fried eggs & Swiss cheese), Halloumi burger or the Vietnamese Crispy Rice Pancakes (pictured above)!

4. Combi

If you’re looking for light, healthy breakfasts after a few days of indulgent eating, head to Combi.

This isn’t your typical boring health food!

The menu is super creative and features such unique items as Pesto Sourdough Crumpets with vegan parmesan, a Peanut Butter Acai Bowl and Buckwheat Pancakes topped with chia jam, coconut icecream, passionfruit pulp and macadamia crunch.

Vegans, veggos and plant-based friends will be in heaven. The smoothies, smoothie bowls and acai bowls make up one of the best selections you will find in Byron.

Spruce up your morning coffee with fan favourites such as macadamia milk (or my beloved Bonsoy), try a turmeric or matcha latte, or maybe an adaptogenic hot chocolate made on reishi and chaga mushroom.

5. Bayleaf Cafe

Bayleaf is located right in the heart of Byron and prides itself on its ethically sourced and sustainable produce, free range meats and artisan sourdough.

Feel invited in by the homey atmosphere, bohemian charm and great tunes.

A local favourite and one of the most popular cafés in Byron due to amazing coffee and a fresh, seasonal menu. Even Chris Hemsworth has been spotted paying a visit!

Favourites include the sweet corn fritter stack and paleo granola. Pair it with a coconut cold brew to see what all the fuss is about!

DIP – Dining in Paris – lets its French-Australian chef’s origins shine through in a menu chock-full of pastries, crepes and pain au chocolat.

Just a five-minute walk to the main beach, the stylish interior is inspired by 1930s Paris, paying homage to French jazz and antiques.

Just A Bit Down the Road

9. Folk

A 5-minute drive out of the heart of Byron, in a gorgeous little white-washed cabin flanked by trees, you’ll find Folk.

This insta-worthy cafe serves up iconic clean-eats such as buckwheat banana hotcakes, a double egg roll, and it’s namesake Folk burrito.

Folk’s self-proclaimed soul kitchen ethos combines craftsmanship with championing a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, and the staff are committed to serving up organic and ethical ingredients. The wholesome ’70s hippie vibes shine through in this hidden gem.

Chill out to vibey tunes in the garden and let your tastebuds be impressed by delectable, unique and of course consciously-created culinary delights.

10. Three Blue Ducks

What would a Byron breakfast round-up be without a mention of Three Blue Ducks?

One of five Three Blue Ducks locations around the country, these guys were the first Aussie cafe to be invited to the Good Food Guide restaurant awards.

You’ll find it just around a 10-minute drive out of Byron, situated on an 80 acre working farm. The peaceful macadamia orchard creates the perfect ambience for a perfect breakfast.

The menu items here come with a slightly increased price tag, but you will soon see why, with foodie temptations from Filipino sausage to spanner crab scramble.

Be sure to book ahead – it gets busy.

Special offerings include the magnificent Sunday Roast, and the menu is constantly changing with the seasons.

If you’re unable to secure a table, pick up some produce items in the store. You can even pre-order a luxury hamper to enjoy on the grounds. Then, take a wander through the macadamia orchard and fields of wildly roaming chickens and pigs, and pick a spot to enjoy your house-made goods. Now if that isn’t straight out of a fairytale!

11. Top Shop

This ultra-fun cafe is perched on a grassy knoll outside of town, in a converted 1950s milk bar.

The Kokomo old school surf aesthetic takes you back to the good old days of Byron Bay.

They serve up incredible single-origin coffee and there is even kombucha on tap, meaning the seating inside is generally chock-full. Don’t let that stop you – with a laidback and chill atmosphere flanked by a palm-lined street, you’ll see locals flocking to lounge on the sunny grass outside.

It’s just a 15-minute walk to Clarke’s beach, so why not grab a takeaway breakfast and eat on the sand. The famous fish burger is a sell out – get in early!

12. The Roadhouse

Sitting on the outskirts of Byron Bay town (just a five-minute drive), The Roadhouse invites visitors into its stunning terrace and sunny courtyard for a laidback coffee and snack.

13. Byron Bay General Store

In one of the oldest buildings in town (built in 1947) you will find a stunning cafe with an amazing vintage vibe. The coastal aesthetics of this place are relaxing and inviting, decked out with rustic seating, oversized umbrellas, and weathered paint and reclaimed wood textures.

Just a 20-minute walk from the main drag of Byron, it’s a local’s favourite and features great coffee, fresh produce and loads of vegetarian options. At this mostly solar-powered café, you’ll even get a 10% discount if you walk or cycle to the store.

It’s an institution of Byron, and not to be missed on your next visit.

Set on a stunning beachfront location, right on the headland of Clarkes Beach, Kiosk showcases what Byron is all about. Why not walk up from main beach and people watch as you go?

If you want to pair your morning meal with the sound of breaking waves and beams of sunshine, this is the place. Take up residence on an outdoor picnic rug or table and make a local’s pit-stop for a delicious breakfast bowl, smoothie or signature breakfast roll on the move.

15. Harvest Newrybar

Located just outside of Byron in the quaint town of Newrybar (about a 20-minute drive), Harvest cooks up a trendy space for connection and community through gardens and local farmers’ produce.

Harvest has become a destination in and of itself.

Expect to while away hours sampling goodies from house-smoked pastrami to French-style pasties, all within a lovingly restored vintage Queenslander.

The precinct features a restaurant, historic bakery, local deli, coffee cart and village green.
